1.1 SCIENCE
1.1.1 General Requirements

Certain 'overarching requirements' apply across all stages (i.e. key stages 1, 2, 3 and 4 for 11-16 year olds) of the Science National Curriculum. The ones which could be targeted by using the website are in the two areas of:
(i) Application of Science:
Pupils should:
consider ways in which science is applied and used, and to evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of scientific and technological developments for individuals, communities and environments;
consider the power and limitations of science in addressing industrial, social and environmental issues and some of the ethical dilemmas involved.
(ii) The nature of scientific ideas:

Pupils should:
consider ways in which scientific ideas may be affected by the social and historical contexts in which they develop, and how these contexts may affect whether or not the ideas are accepted.

1.1.2 Specific areas of science s
The topic area for which the Arthur C Clarke Foundation website is most relevant and useful (for learners and teachers) is: Physical Processe s .

(i) Electricity and Magnetism :
Pupils should be taught the quantitative relationship between resistance, voltage and current.

ii) Waves:
Pupils should be taught:

the meaning of frequency, wavelength and amplitude of a wave;

that the electromagnetic spectrum includes radio waves, microwaves, infra-red, visible light, ultraviolet waves, X-rays and gamma rays;

some uses of radio waves, microwaves, infra-red and visible light in communications.
